Snow & Ice

During winter months, the Street Division utilizes many roadway treatment actions to improve the safety of city streets. These can include pre-treating the roadway with anti-icing chemicals and applying de-icing chemicals to prevent snow and ice from accumulating and bonding to the pavement.  If compact snow or black ice do form on the roadway, the Streets Division applies pre-wet sand and/or salt to break down snow/ice and make mechanical removal (plowing) more effective. Winter Ice/Snow Routes
With over 200 miles of city roadway under their supervision, the Street Division prioritizes resources according to safety impacts and cost-effectiveness when clearing snow and ice.  This means that equipment, materials, and personnel are directed to the areas where drivers are most at risk during inclement weather.  The Ice/Snow Routes Map was developed based on these goals.  In addition to safety and taxpayer costs, factors such as traffic volume, hills, curves, bridges, and access to emergency services (hospitals, fire stations, etc.) were all taken into consideration in developing the winter Ice/Snow routes.  See the Ice/Snow Routes Map (PDF) for specific route information
