STORMWATER MANAGEMENT PROGRAM

We provide technical assistance in environmental engineering to other Public Works and Planning departments.  The focus of Stormwater Management is to provide viable information so we can better serve our City departments as well as our citizens.  There are many new environmental laws that we must comply with… such as stormwater management and salmon protection.  To view the current NPDES requirements and associated reports, please view the Clearn Water & NPDES page.

The Stormwater Management Department offers solutions that can enhance our natural resources.  Please do your part to help preserve the quality of our water and the environment.  Take a look at Puyallup's rain gardens or the Water Resources page to see how every citizen can do their part to help.

Puyallup and WSU-Puyallup is featured on Rainier Country detailing the installation of the Stormwater Management Research & Monitoring Retrofit Project.  Watch the video segment and click the link on the left below for more information on this project.

UPCOMING STORMWATER EVENTS

Puyallup Stormwater in the News & Community

Fish Friendly Car Washing

In a June 2010 issue of The Herald, Mark Palmer, city Stormwater Engineer, was featured as he washed his car during a rain garden planting event on June 12th. What made Mark's efforts special was that he was using one of the city's fish-friendly car wash kits. The kit includes a plastic tub that inserts in the storm drain collecting the runoff as you wash your car. The contaiminated water is pumped out of the insert through a hose, and into the nearest sewer drain. These simple efforts do wonders in protecting our Puyallup River, the inhabiting fish, and plant life. Check out the Fish-Friendly Car Washing pagefor more information on how you can do your part and gain extra publicity for your next fundraising car wash event!

Rain, rain, and more Rain Gardens

June 12th, 2010 marked the second Rain Garden Installation event for the City of Puyallup. Garden Parties is the title of the article covered in The Herald. Take a look at the Puyallup Rain Gardens page for more information on the next installation location and date!

Puyallup Awarded two $500K grants for Stormwater Management Projects

The City of Puyallup was selected for two $500,000 FY 2010-2011 State Department of Ecology Municipal Stormwater Grants of Regional or Statewide Significance (GROSS Grants). Twenty-eight jurisdictions applied and only 15 were funded. Puyallup was ranked 7th and 9th. Only three projects were awarded the full $500,000 amount. Puyallup received two of the three full grants.

Both projects will be coordinated through Washington State University – Puyallup. The city and WSU-Puyallup are already partners on a stormwater control retrofit grant that was secured by the city in early 2008. The GROSS grants will support two new projects that will also shine a light on new stormwater technologies.

The first project will create, develop and maintain a Process, Protocol and Product Evaluation Program for New Stormwater Emerging Technologies.  There are many interesting products being developed to mitigate the impact of stormwater.  This new program will establish a procedure to provide review and evaluation of the new emerging stormwater treatment technologies.

The second project creates a technical resource center for stormwater management solutions and education at WSU-Puyallup.  The center will house long-term and ongoing stormwater research that is specifically designed to support relevant and current stormwater management strategies and practices.

“The City of Puyallup has become the go-to community for emerging stormwater management technology,” said Puyallup City Manager Gary McLean.  "The city and WSU-Puyallup have developed a strong partnership that combines science-based research and the expertise of city staff that will not only benefit our community, but other communities in our state."
