Design Review and Historic Preservation Board

The Design Review and Historic Preservation Board is comprised of seven (7) members. The members are appointed by the City Council and serve four-year terms. The Board currently meets as required in response to development applications.

Meetings take place at Puyallup City Hall, 5th Floor  ~ Room 504 (or Council Chambers as needed) at 4:00 pm. Meetings are scheduled on either the first or third Thursday afternoons, on an as-needed basis at such time as review is necessary for development projects within the Board's purview. Meetings are held upon the establishment of a pre-determined quorum as established by the bylaws.

The Design Review and Historic Preservation Board is a decision making body that reviews and renders decisions on qualifying applications submitted to the city for projects occurring in the CBD-Core and CBD zones for conformance with the adopted Downtown Design Guidelines. Qualifying applications include buildings that are 10,000 square feet or greater; new additions and/or renovations of historic structures (constructed prior to 1946); new and/or renovated parking garage structures; and transition area projects that either immediately abut or are directly across the street from a residential zone (except RM-Core).

The majority of the Design Review and Historic Preservation Board members are required to reside in the city of Puyallup. As described in PMC 2.29.030, the board shall consist of at least two registered architects; two members directly associated with applicable construction trades (e.g., contractor, structural engineer, developer, etc); at least one member shall have special expertise/training in historic preservation and/or shall be affiliated with a historic preservation organization; and other members who shall either be associated with local interest groups (e.g., downtown merchant, arts group) or in a related land use/design discipline (e.g., realtor, historic preservation specialist). All members of the design review and historic preservation board shall have a demonstrated interest, competence, or knowledge in historic preservation. The Design Review and Historic Preservation Board members serve four (4) year terms.
