On Your Mark, Get Set....READ!

2016 summer Reading Program for children begins June 20th!

Get a head start by preregistering beginning June 1st.  Babies through 12 years old can be reading champions in the children's program. Hang onto your reading tickets as you earn them to enter in our weekly prize drawings.  You might just win something special!  Everyone who finishes 15 hours of reading can claim their free book and goody package. 

Explore movement in our series of summer programs.  There is so much to see and do at your library this summer!  All activities are FREE

Joining the summer reading program is easy as 1,2,3!
  1. Come to the library to sign up in person or sign up online. (Preregistration starts June 1st.)
  2. Start reading and keep track of your time.  For every one hour read (or read to) fill out a ticket for a chance to win cool prizes.  The more you read, the more chances you have to win!  (Prize drawing boxes will be available June 20th through August 20th.)
  3. Finish the reading goal of 15 hours or more by the end of August and earn a FREE book courtesy of the Friends of the Puyallup Public Library,a FREE ticket to Puyallup Library Night at Cheney Stadium with the Tacoma Rainiers baseball team, a FREE pass to Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium/Northwest Trek, as well as coupons to great area businesses.  (Only one 15 hour prize packet per child, but children may enter the one hour prize drawing as long as reading continues throughout the summer.)

    Rhubarb the Reindeer at Meeker Days

    Rhubarb new 2016Watch for Rhubarb the Reindeer at Meeker Days!  The Tacoma Rainiers baseball team mascot will visit the library to encourage kids to keep reading this summer.  Kids who read (or are read to) for 15 hours can earn a free ticket to a Tacoma Rainiers game for Puyalllup Library Night at Cheney Stadium on August 31st.

    From Hula Hoops to jump ropes, the fifties were FUN!  Stop by the library anytime during open hours to complete our fun challenge for a small prize.

    No registration is required.  All ages fun for the whole family.



    Makey Makey Fun Lab with Electrical Circuits
    Thursday, June 30th
    2:00 pm to 3:00 pm

    Banana PianoExplore the science of electrical circuits with Makey Makey computer kits, special pens, robots, bananas, and more.  Create a food piano, use a pen to draw a circuit, or play with a Cubelet robot, all while learning about how electrons flow through objects.  Some materials for this program have been generously provided by the Washington State Library. This program is recommended for children in grades 2nd through 6th.

    Kids Car Rally

    Cup, Cup, Clap, Clap
    Friday, July 8th
    3:00 pm to 4:00 pm

    Cup gameGet moving with some fun musical clapping games. Learn how to do the popular "Cup Song" dance as seen in the movies.  How long can you keep up the rhythm?

    No registration required.  Recommended for children in grades 1st through 6th.


    A Visit with author Karen Cushman
    Monday, July 11th

    Newbery Award winning children's/young adult author, Karen Cushman (The Midwife's Apprentice, Catherine Called Birdy, and many more great books), will be here to talk about her new book Grayling's Song.  Stick around afterwards to get your books signed. 

    Recommended for children, teens and adults who enjoy historical or fantasy fiction. No registration is required.

    Get Inspired: Focus on Artist Romero Britto
    Friday, July 15th

    Britto Elephant

    Join local art teacher Kim Zeiger in learning about famous Brazilian artist Romero Britto who combines elements of Cubism and Pop Art, using vibrant colors and bold patterns as visual expression of hope and happiness.  Create a Britto style elephant.

    Express Your Personality

    3:30 pm to 4:30 pm

    Romero BrittoExplore your world with local art teacher Kim Zeiger, while learning about Romero Britto, a neo-pop artist, painter, and sculptor from Brazil.  He combines elements of Cubism and Pop Art as visual expressions of hope and happiness.  Then create a Britto inspired animal while using bold lines and patterns.

    Baby Brain Builders Storytime
    Tuesday, July 19th

    A storytime just for babies!  After stories, little ones and their caregivers can explore with building blocks, shape sorters, Mega Bloks and more. 

    No registration is required.  Recommended for children ages 6 to 18 months.

    Minecraft: Summer Young Builders Competition
    Tuesday, July 26th

    MINECRAFT - KEEP

    Young Minecrafters take over the library meeting room!  Play with friends and meet other fanatics.  Go exploring for fun or compete in our Build Competition - use creative mode to compete in our themed event for prizes.  Entries will be judged on creativity, use of theme, and use of environment.  Bring your own device or use one of the library's computers.

    Creative Yoga

    Experience the benefits of yoga through interactive storytelling and creative movement.  Play along with instructor Angie McLaughlin from Yoga Soleil as you move through yoga sequences designed to improve motor skills, body awareness, group cooperation, and self-regulation.  This class ends with a resting period for relaxation and reflection.

    No registration is required.  Recommended for ages 6 to 12.


    Creative Yoga for Wee Ones and Parents

    Putting Through the Pages

    Read It, Sing It, Move It, Play It!

    Nancy StewartJoin Northwest children's singer-songwriter Nancy Stewart as she shows young children how to read, sing, move, and play using tongue-twisting, brain-building, jump-it-up, silly songs and singing games.

    Knight Life: Sports and Fitness in the Middle Ages

    An interactive demonstration of arms, armor, combat, knighthood, and physical fitness inKnights of Veritas the middle ages presented by The Knights of Veritas
