Comic Books & Cosplay
We’ll be giving out comic books at the front of the library, from 10:00 am until 1:00 pm. Treat your inner comic book guy to series like DC’s The New 52, Adventure Time, Hellboy, Avatar: The Last Airbender or Hello Kitty, just to name a few of the titles we’ll have available.
This year, we’re celebrating the art of cosplay. Cosplay, short for costume play, is the practice of dressing up as a character from a movie, book, or video game. If you’ve ever been to a convention like Emerald City Comic Con, SakuraCon, or PAX, then you’ve probably seen cosplayers! Throughout Free Comic Book Day, we will hold several programs talking about and celebrating cosplay.
Free Comic Books
10:00 am – 1:00 pm
Stop by the front of the Library and pick from a wide selection of comics for Free Comic Book Day. We'll have a little something for everyone. While we can't guarantee that we'll have every title available, click here to see a list of the comics that publishers are releasing for this year's event. Supplies are limited, so visit us early for the best selection.
My Other Me: A Film About Cosplayers
12:30 – 2:00 pm
My Other Me is a documentary that chronicles a year in the life of three different cosplayers: a veteran who launched a career from cosplay, a fourteen-year-old first-timer, and a transgender who found himself through cosplay. The documentary examines each cosplayer’s home life, costume process, their journey through the convention circuit, and the profound effect cosplay is making on each of their lives. Cosplay Tips, Tricks, & Techniques
2:30 – 4:00 pm
Our experts give you their best tips and tricks when it comes to cosplaying. Find out more about buying cosplay online vs. making your own, makeup techniques, crossplay, genderswapping, reliable resources, and etiquette. It’s a chance to meet local cosplayers and share stories.
6:00 – 8:30 pm
Join us for a cosplay party after the library closes! It’s a chance to meet other fans and show off your passion for your favorite books, shows, and comics! Cosplayers of any and all fandoms are welcome and encouraged to attend in costume. We will be holding a contest, where you can compete in one of three categories: Coolest Craftsmanship, Best In-Character, and Freakin’ Fan-tastic. This event is all-ages, though we ask that those ages 15 and under come with a parent or guardian. Adult chaperones are not required to purchase a ticket. Snacks and drinks will be provided. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at the door or online at www.brownpapertickets.com.
This event is generously sponsored by the Friends of the Puyallup Public Library. We partner with Fantasium Comics (1500 South 336th Street, Suite 12A, Federal Way, WA 98003). The first Free Comic Book Day was held in 2002, and the event has continued to grow over the years. We are proud to take part in this program, which gives away millions of comic books to interested readers every year. The comic format can encourage readers of all ages and interests, providing quality literature as well as a gateway for reluctant readers. Comics can cross cultural boundaries in a way that most prose works do not. The Puyallup Public Library offers comic collections for children, teens, and adults, as well as titles studying the value of reading comics.
