The Library has rooms available for reservation at no charge for those who would like a quiet place to study, take an exam, or hold a meeting for their organization. To learn more about our meeting room policies or to apply for a meeting/study room, click here.

Can I get a refund if I paid for a lost item and then found it?

Puyallup Public Library will issue a refund for payment for a lost item if a customer returns a cataloged item within six months of payment. A credit for the cost of the item will be automatically posted to the customer's account. The customer may request that the credit be exchanged for a refund. In such cases, a refund check will be requested from the City of Puyallup Finance Department.

Before refunding a credit to a customer with fines on their library account, the Library will pay the fines with the credit and refund only tcredit remaining thereafter.

Can I renew the things I have checked out?

You may renew items you have checked online, by phone, or in person. Your time is extended from the day you request renewal. If another patron is waiting for an item you have, it will not renew.

DVDs renew for one week from the day you ask for renewal (1 renewal)

New books renew for 21 days from the day you ask for renewal (1 renewal)

Quick Picks may not be renewed

Any other books, music CDs, and other materials renew for 21 days from the day you ask for renewal (2 renewals)

Does the Library borrow materials from other libraries?

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) provides materials that are not owned by the Puyallup Public Library. Before submitting a request for ILL, check our catalog to make sure we don't already own the item. It is up to the librarian responsible for that area of the collection to determine whether we will purchase or obtain an item through ILL.

Does the Library have free wi-fi?

Yes! You can bring in your laptop, PDA, or hand-held gaming device and use our Wi-Fi to connect to the internet. Click here (pdf) to view instructions on connecting to the Library's Wi-Fi. Please review our Wireless Internet Access Policy (pdf).

How do I pay my fines?

You may pay by cash or check (with a valid Washington State driver's license) at the Card Services Desk, or by using a debit/card card at one of our Express Checkout stations.

How do I renew materials online?

Go to the Library's Online Catalog and log in to My Account. Click on "Items Out" and select the items you wish to renew, then click on the "Renew" button. Verify the new due dates. You can review these instructions by clicking here (pdf).

How will I be notified when a requested item is available?

You will receive an email, an automated phone message, or US mail, depending on the option you have chosen in your patron record. If you need to know the option you chose or would like to change who we contact you, please speak with a Library staff member.

What if I lose or damage something I checked out?

We will charge your account the cost of the item plus a $6.00 processing fee. Processing fees are for book covers, barcodes, security strips, and staff time.

With the permission of a librarian, you may choose to replace the lost item with a new copy of the same title, in the same format. For example, a hardcover book must be replaced with a new hardcover copy; paperbacks can be replaced with a new copy in paperback; etc. Please speak with a staff member before purchasing a replacement copy.

What if my library materials are overdue?

We charge the following overdue fines for each item beginning the day after it is due. Dates that the Library is closed (Sundays and holidays) do not count towards fines. If fees on your card exceed $15.00, your card will become invalid.

DVDs: $1.00 per day

You may renew an item if it's already overdue. Fines will be assessed for the overdue days according to the list above. Avoid overdue fines by renewing materials online, by phone, or in person.

What is my PIN?

The Puyallup Public Library Board is comprised of five citizens residing in the City if Puyallup and a non-voting member of the Friends of the Library. The Board members are appointed by the City Manager. Board members are library advocates within their community, representing and promoting the library services and programs. The Board is responsible for the development of policy for the selection of books, periodicals, maps, materials, and information services for the Library's operation. The Puyallup Public Library Board Meetings are held the third Monday of each month, with the exception of January and February, at 6:15 pm in the Library History Room.

Reciprocal Borrowing

Puyallup Public Library Cards

Anyone living in the City of Puyallup is eligible for the Puyallup resident library card at no charge. You can either apply online or visit the library. In order to receive full use of the library, bring in picture identification and identification that verifies your current address. If current identification is not available, users may obtain a non-verified card, which provides limited access of three items for check out, computer use, and remote access to databases. Patrons who have library cards are subject to the Library Borrower Policy (pdf) and Library Card Responsibilities (pdf).

If you are a minor (under 18 years old), a notice will be sent to the parent or legal guardian telling them that their child has applied for a library card and that the parent is legally responsible for any materials checked out by the minor.

Items you check out of the library have different loan periods, so some materials may be due earlier than others. When you check items out, you will be given a printed receipt with the due dates. You can check the online catalog in the library, from home, office, school, or by telephone to see what items you have checked out, overdue, on hold, or to verify due dates of materials or renew items. If items are overdue, fines vary depending on the materials checked out.

Your library card allows you to have access to reference databases that Puyallup Public Library licenses on behalf of its patrons. If you are outside the library, you may need to enter your library card number and your patron identification number (PIN) to search the databases. However, some databases are restricted to in-library use.

Reciprocal Agreements with Neighboring Libraries

Reciprocal agreements between library jurisdictions allow residents of one district to use a library in another district without paying a non-resident fee. Library users may apply for and have library cards in the other library systems. Library users are expected to follow the regulations of the district or city whose services they are using.

Present a photo ID with your current residential address at any participating library. You will be presented with a separate library card for each library jurisdiction. Seattle Public Library requires Puyallup residents to show a Puyallup Library card as part of the application process. Puyallup reciprocal library cards are good for two years and may be renewed as needed.

By obtaining a library card to another library, patrons can use the vast resources of other library systems, including access to downloadable books, electronic resources, and an increase to many databases not owned by the Puyallup Library.

What Do The Friends of the Library Do?

The Friends of the Puyallup Public Library enhance and expand the resources of the Library through memberships and the on-going sale of books in the Friends of the Library Store. This revenue helps to sponsor special events for children and teens in the Library, including the Summer Reading Program. The Friends of the Library also host educational and cultural programs for all ages throughout the year.

The Friends of the Library meet on the third Thursday of the month, at 10:30 AM, in the Library meeting rooms.

Are you interested in donating books, movies, compact discs, or other items from your personal library? If so, the materials will be used either by the Puyallup Public Library or sold in the Friends of the Puyallup Library bookstore. Materials can be donated at the Library card services desk or you can contact the Library ahead of time to make an appointment, either by calling us at 253.841.5454 or by email. Please ask a staff member for a gift receipt.

Volunteer at Your Library

There are many ways volunteers can contribute to the library. Volunteers help attain the mission of lifelong learning by teaching computer classes, delivering library materials to homebound individuals, mending materials, and many other essential jobs. We accept volunteers from ages 14 and up. To learn more about volunteer openings at the Library, please call Beth Swartzbaugh at 253.841.5454 or email her at elizabeths@ci.puyallup.wa.us. History of Puyallup Public Library

History of the Puyallup Public Library

Puyallup has always had a library. Even before there was a city, there was a library. Before Ezra Meeker platted the town in 1877, his wife Eliza Jane was lending books to the community from her cabin in what is now Pioneer Park. In true pioneer spirit, everyone shared. By 1880 the community had outgrown this arrangement. Eight prominent businessmen pledged $5000 to form the Puyallup Library Association. They rented a small room on Pioneer, just west of Meridian, and employed a librarian, Francis McCoy. She earned $25 a month. If she wanted to take a vacation, she was required to find and pay her replacement herself.

At the beginning of the century, industrialist millionaire Andrew Carnegie turned philanthropist. He financed the building of public libraries across the country. Eventually, 3,000 Carnegie libraries were built. Local citizens convinced the City Council to apply for a grant. In exchange for building the library, at a cost of $12,500, the Council pledged $1,250 annually for support of the library.

The building was built in what is now Pioneer Park, on land donated by the Meekers. They gave the property to the City of Puyallup with the understanding that it would be used only for a park. Meeker's permission had to be obtained before construction could begin. At the time, he was travelling the country promoting the Oregon Trail Restoration. Eventually he was located in Texas, and gave his consent.

The new library opened in 1913. It was 4,000 square feet with the typical Carnegie library staircase entrance. This building served the community for 50 years. Eventually city engineers had to declare it unsafe. The floors sagged under the weight of the books. The voters passed a bond for the construction of a new, modern facility. It was 11,622 square feet, and the cost was $210,000.

The population of Puyallup grew from 12,450 to 30,740. A building which housed mainly books in 1962 now accommodated videos, CDs, talking books, and computers as well. The meeting room was in constant use. Students and business people had a hard time finding a quiet place to work and study. Browsers found it hard to find a space to read in peace. Staff had little space to organize their work areas. The City Council hired the architectural firm Merritt-Pardini to study the long term space requirements of city departments.

The Merritt-Pardini Civic Center Master Plan study concluded that there was enough city-owned property in the neighborhood of Pioneer Park to accommodate the space needs of the City's departments.

September 14, 1999, voters approved a bond, allowing the new 39,500 square foot library to be built. August 30 and 31, 2002 was the grand opening celebration for the new building, beginning with an elegant gala and silent auction, and culminating with crowds of people anxious to see their new library.

It was planned to provide space for 150,000 books, 20,000 videos, 12,000 talking books, and 10,000 compact discs, as well as computers for accessing the Internet, databases, and word processing. There are multiple meeting rooms to allow community groups of varying sizes to meet at the same time. Study rooms are available for students. Quiet spaces for reading are separate from more active areas. The Library is able to provide more programs for all ages.

In the first four months of 2009, patrons checked out 164,967 items—about 41,000 per month.

Each year our wonderful volunteers donate nearly 2000 hours to the library. This year, as of April, they had already donated 812.5 hours!

Beginning May 26th, the Puyallup Public Library will be using the Code Adam procedure, a powerful search tool for locating lost and possibly abducted children. This program is simple to implement; if a parent/guardian cannot locate their child while in the Library, they can report to any staff member and a special Code Adam alert will be issued to the rest of the building. Library staff will immediately begin searching for the child and, if the child is not found within ten minutes, the police will be notified.

Code Adam was started in 1994 by Walmart in memory of Adam Walsh, a child who disappeared from a Sears department store and was later found murdered. The procedure is set up so that there is the least amount of time between a child being lost and notifying police, if needed.

The Library has information on hand in the building, and staff members will be able to answer your questions about the procedure. Parents will also be able to find information at the Children's Desk about how to create and update their children's ID info.

The Library is dedicated to providing a welcoming and safe environment for all our patrons. However, please be aware that the Puyallup Public Library has an Unattended Child Policy. Parents/guardians are responsible for the actions and well-being of their children, and are expected to be in the immediate vicinity of their young children.

Check out audiobooks and ebooks using Washington Anytime Library. Puyallup Public Library is part of a consortium of libraries subscribing to this service. Click here to go to the WA Anytime Library website.

Download Music

Download music for free with your Puyallup Public Library card. Just enter your library card number and PIN to download up to 3 songs per week that you can keep forever. Freegal music is an online database that provides access to songs from Sony Music. The music files are DRM-free and do not expire, and songs are downloaded in an MP3 format (compatible with everything), so they can be saved to computer, mobile device or MP3 player, including an iPod.

The Library building was opened in August, 2002, though Puyallup has a long and rich history of providing its citizens with a public library. The Puyallup Public Library serves residents living within the city of Puyallup, as well as neighboring communities through reciprocal agreements.

The Library carries books, compact discs, DVDs, newspapers and magazines, audio books, and Spanish-language materials. We also provide resources to the community such as computer terminals with word-processing software and internet-access, free Wi-fi service, self-checkout machines, meeting rooms, and programs and classes for all ages.

Our staff is happy to help you with any questions you have, including research assistance.

Reference Databases

Due to the current economic situation, the City has been forced to make some budget cuts, and this has impacted the Library. We have had to make some hard decisions about how to make the most effective use of our money, and still give the best service we can. As a result, we have cut some of the databases that were not used as much as others. Thank you for your support, and please feel free to ask us for further help, either by e-mail or by calling in to the Library at 253.841.5454.

What is a database?

A database is an indexed collection of articles and data from sources that include but are not limited to encyclopedias, newspapers, professional & trade journals, popular magazines, and specialty publications. Each one offers a different set of titles, features, and date range of publication. Some articles are provided in full-text, along with images such as photographs or tables. In some cases only a citation is provided. The following links provide access to databases to which the Puyallup Public Library subscribes.

How do I check a database?

Simply click once on the title of a database and it will open for you. Enter your Puyallup Public Library card number when prompted. Not all of the databases can be accessed outside of the Library, so please read the notes under the link to see if a database has restricted-access.

Getting a Library Card

Anyone living in the City of Puyallup is eligible for the Puyallup resident library card at no charge. You can either apply online or visit the library. In order to receive full use of the library, bring in picture identification and identification that verifies your current address. If current identification is not available, users may obtain a non-verified card, which provides limited access of three items for check out, computer use and remote access to databases. Patrons who have library cards are subject to the Library Borrower Policy (pdf) and Library Card Responsibilities (pdf).

If you are a minor (under 18), a notice will be sent to the parent or legal guardian telling them that their child has applied for a library card and that the parent is legally responsible for any materials checked out by the minor.

Items you check out of the library have different loan periods, so some materials may be due earlier than others. When you check items out, you will be given a printed receipt with the due dates. You can check the online catalog in the library, from your home, office, school, or by calling the library to see what items you have checked out, overdue, on hold, or to verify due dates of materials or renew items. If items are overdue, fines vary depending on the materials checked out.

Your library card allows you to have access to reference databases that the Puyallup Public Library licenses on behalf of its patrons. If you are outside the library, you may need to enter your library card's barcode number and your patron identification number (PIN) to search the databases.

If you do not live in the City of Puyallup and are ineligible to receive a free card through our reciprocal agreements with neighboring library systems, you may purchase a Non-Resident Card. The fee is $150 per year.

Reciprocal Agreements with Neighboring Libraries

If you are not a resident of the City of Puyallup but would still like to get a Puyallup Public Library card, please click here to view our current reciprocal agreements with neighboring library systems. You may be eligible to receive a library card without paying a non-resident fee. If you are ineligible to receive a Puyallup Library card, our non-resident fee is currently $150 per year.

My Account

Do you need to access your Library account information? Once you connect to the catalog, just click on the "My Account" tab and use your barcode number and pin to log in. You can browse our collection and create a reading list, access your account information, place items on hold, or renew materials you currently have checked out!

USER ID = the barcode located on the back of your library card
PIN = usually the last four digits of your phone number, unless you specified a different number when you received your library card

Fourteen community members, representing many viewpoints, met this year and determined the vision of our community and how the library could aide our city residents to reach that vision through 2010.

2013 Summer Reading Program

Groundbreaking Reads

Dive into something new this summer! Reread an old favorite. Summer is a great time to delve between the pages of new and old books, movies, or magazines while participating in our Adult Summer Reading Contest!

To take part, all you need is a game board from the library - you can pick one up at the library or download it here (pdf). Work your way around the game board. Check off at least 8 boxes and don't forget to include at least one square of every color. When finished, fill in your name and phone number and drop it off at the 2nd floor Reference Desk between June 17^th and August 24^th. You will automatically win a free frozen yogurt card from Elements Frozen Yogurt and be entered into a Grand Prize drawing for a Kindle Fire eReader.

Adult Summer Reading runs from June 17^th through August 17^th. All entries must be received by August 24^th. Grand prize drawing will be held August 31^_st. Only one entry per person. Preregistration is not required. All books you read can also count towards the Mayor's 100 Book Challenge.

Learn about rare books and book collecting from a professional! Sweet Pea Flaherty from King's Books in Tacoma will provide an overview and tips on collecting books. Learn about recognizing first editions, evaluating condition, and what makes a book "collectable". If you have ever thought about starting a rare book collection, this program is for you. This Adult Summer Reading program is free and no registration is required.

Puyallup Public Library Outreach Services

The Puyallup Public Library Outreach Services program delivers materials to those living within the City of Puyallup who can no longer come to the Library on their own. This service is open only to those who live within the city limits. Outreach Services delivers a wide variety of materials to residents living in assisted living, skilled nursing and retirement facilities and to those who are still living in their homes. Outreach staff picks materials tailored to each participant's wants and needs. Deliveries occur once a month on a set schedule.

We need Outreach Volunteers!

Outreach Services Volunteers provide support to the Library’s Outreach Services program and the Outreach Services Technician. This program provides delivery of materials to seniors residing in assisted living, skilled nursing facilities and their own homes within the City of Puyallup. If you are interested in donating your time as a library volunteer and are curious about doing outreach, please read over the responsibilities and qualifications and then fill out a volunteer application.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Select and deliver materials to assigned patrons once-a-month for at least one year
Deliver materials to at least five (5) patrons, possibly ten (10)
Agree to maintain patron confidentiality
Work closely with Library Outreach Technician, Librarian Supervisor and designated facility contact
Attend a training session in preparation for serving our patrons. This will take approximately one (1) hour
Shadow Outreach trainer as she delivers materials to the customers you will have. This will take approximately two to three (2-3) hours

Qualifications:

Be able to provide a commitment of at least six months
Be at least 18 years old
Provide own transportation
Have a valid Washington State driver’s license
Be willing to travel outside of your neighborhood to provide services
Be able to lift and carry bags of materials weighing approximately twenty to thirty (20-30) pounds
Comfortable working with seniors and the disabled
Have good communication skills
Love library materials and sharing that love with those who can no longer come into the library
Must be willing to submit to and pass a Washington State Patrol background check provided by the City of Puyallup

Meeting Rooms

The meeting rooms of the Puyallup Public Library are available at no charge, during library open hours, except as noted in the Library Meeting Room Policy (pdf), for non-profit community groups, including civic, charitable, educational, religious and other public service groups, when not in use for Library purposes. Rooms can be booked up to six months in advance and will only be booked to adults. Youth groups may use the rooms if a responsible adult is present at all times.

Our new meeting room reservation system allows you to view our schedule and submit your requests for meeting and study rooms. Email us with questions or you can submit an application by one of the following options:

Hearing Devices & Meeting Rooms

The Library has two different devices for people who are hearing impaired and are using the Library Meeting Rooms. For people who don't have a hearing aid, the Library offers a PPA Select R37 Receiver with earbud. For people who already have a hearing aid and need further assistance, the Library offers a Neckloop Telecoil Coupler. These devices are compatible with the South Meeting Room or combined use of the North and South Meeting Room. To use either device, patrons must check them out with a Puyallup Public Library card.

Mayor's 100 Book Challenge

Mayor's 100 Book Challenge

In honor of the Library’s 100th anniversary, Mayor Hansen would like to challenge each of you to read or listen to 100 books this year, and become a member of Puyallup Public Library’s 100 Book Club.

The Challenge is open to children, teens, and adults! Kids ages 6 - 12 can download their reading log here. The teen and adult log (for ages 13+) can be downloaded here. You can also pick up reading logs in the Library.
Books read between January 1^st and December 31^st 2013 can be counted towards the Reading Challenge.
Paperbacks, hardbacks, graphic novels, eBooks, and audiobooks may be counted. Magazines and comic books do not count, nor do picture books that are read by anyone over age 10.
Each title can only be counted once.
Members must read or listen to the title themselves (children cannot count books that are read to them).
Reading logs must be turned in by January 15^th 2014.

If you read 100 books in the calendar year and submit your reading log, you can become a 100 Book Club member and receive:

A 100 Book Club T-shirt
A special-issue 100 Book Club library card
An Invitation to an exclusive 100 Book Club Member Recognition Reception

Puyallup Public Library Foundation

The Puyallup Public Library Foundation, Inc., is a tax-exempt, private, nonprofit corporation that provides supplementary financial support for the Library. Because the demands for library services and the needs and opportunities facing the library are growing much faster than the public funds available to support them, the goal of the Foundation is to enrich, not replace, traditional tax-based support through private fund-raising from individuals, businesses and foundations. Such supplemental funding will make a difference between an adequate city library, and a fabulous one!

Your support to the Puyallup Public Library makes the difference between a good library and a great library. Your donation to the Foundation can improve our collection, provide special author and arts events, and support services that we could not pay for out of city funds. Consider giving a gift or memorial to the library by filling out a Memorial Donation Form (pdf) and mailing a check to the Library. If interested in a memorial, you can also buy an engraved brick (pdf) or a memorial tile (pdf).

Recent projects completed by the Puyallup Library Foundation include the funding for our Quick Pick carts, which houses contemporary titles on the first floor, as well as funding the creation of a more fanciful children's space with an improved play area, children's art, furniture and a computer in the children's area of the library.

What Equipment is Available at the Puyallup Public Library?

Computer Terminals

Computer terminals requires logging in with your Puyallup Public Library Card barcode and pin. If you are not a card holder, we do offer a guest pass at no charge, available at any service desk. Terminals may be used for up to two hours per day for card-carrying Puyallup Library patrons, and one hour per day for guest pass users. Internet access requires acceptance of the Internet Users Agreement (pdf) at the terminal after logging on.

The library currently has forty-two computer terminals available for public use, with an additional eight separate terminals are designated as catalog-only. The non-catalog terminals have internet access, Microsoft Office 2007 applications (Word, Excel, Power Point), and USB ports.

Wi-Fi @ the Library

The Puyallup Public Library has free wireless internet access available for our patrons. Bring in your wireless laptop, pda, handheld game system, or other wireless device, and pull up a cozy chair by the fireplace or enjoy the view of Mt. Rainier while going online. Strategic Plan 2011-2013

STRATEGIC PLAN COMMUNITY FORUM

Heart of the community – Doorway to the World… that is the way Library Strategic Planning Committee members described the Puyallup Public Library and the important role it plays in our city. Twenty community members, representing many viewpoints, met this year and determined the vision of our community and how the library could aide our city residents to reach that vision through 2013.

Library staff compiled the following information for the community members, including: community information, accomplishments from the Strategic Plan 2007-2010 and general information about the library.

Senator Jim Kastama facilitated a planning retreat and worked with the community members to craft a future direction for the library. Based on the community input, library staff and Board then developed a new mission, values and strategies. The Strategic Plan 2011-2013 was adopted by the Library Board in September and the Puyallup City Council in November, 2010.

In order to gather even more from community residents, the public was asked for their feedback about the library. We compiled over 800 responses that provided staff with needed information about the library. This information was used to craft our strategic plan. If you would like to see a survey summary and public response, check the Survey.

The purpose of a strategic plan is to assess the progress that is being made on a continual basis. Library Staff are using a Balanced Scorecard management tool as a new way of monitoring our strategic plan. This Scorecard makes the Library accountable in achieving the planned results and helps us stay focused on achieving our mission.

The strength of a Balanced Scorecard is that it considers all facets of our library operation, including financial, operational, customer service, outcomes and staffing perspectives. Because of the constantly changing library environment, a Balanced Scorecard allows us to keep in touch with what our customers want and how we can better deliver our services. It basically will aid Library staff in determining how to spend our resources.

Puyallup Municipal Code

A codification of the general ordinances of the City of Puyallup.

Revised Code of Washington (RCW)

The Revised Code of Washington (RCW) is the compilation of all permanent laws now in force. It is a collection of Session Laws (enacted by the Legislature, and signed by the Governor, or enacted via the initiative process), arranged by topic, with amendments added and repealed laws removed. It does not include temporary laws such as appropriations acts. The official version of the RCW is published by the Statute Law Committee and the Code Reviser.

The online version of the RCW is updated twice a year, once in the early fall following the legislative session, and again at the end of the year if a ballot measure that changes the law passed at the general election. Copies of the RCW as they existed each year since 2002 are available in the RCW Archive.

Washington Administrative Code (WAC)

Regulations of executive branch agencies are issued by authority of statutes. Like legislation and the Constitution, regulations are a source of primary law in Washington State. The WAC codifies the regulations and arranges them by subject or agency. The online version of the WAC is updated twice a month. Copies of the WAC as they existed each year since 2004 are available in the WAC archive.

History at your finger tips! The Puyallup Public Library will open the History Room archive for public exploration and research on Wednesday, June 19^th, from 5:30 - 7:30 pm.

Volunteers will be available as guides to the photograph collection, past City Directories, Puyallup High School yearbooks, and a wide range of other materials that have historical significance to the community. Materials available date back to the early 1900s.

SUMMER STORYTIME SCHEDULE (pdf)

To meet the learning needs of young children, we offer a FREE series of book related fun designed to introduce sounds, words, story concepts, and encourage social development. No registration required for these classes at the library. For more information call 253-841-5454 or stop at the Children's Desk.

Creativity and stories go hand-in-hand. Attending a free storytime session at the Puyallup Public Library could be your ticket to imaginative play with words and language. Join Children's Librarians, Miss Bonnie and Miss Carol, each week for fun stories, lots of books, songs, rhymes, and sometimes a small craft. Storytimes are designed to introduce children to new and varied vocabulary, which in turn helps children learn to read.

The Summer Storytime session will start June 21 and run through August 16.

What is Early Literacy?

Early literacy is everything children know about reading and writing before they can actually read and write. This starts long before they enter school – whether it's a toddler who wants his favorite book read over and over, or a preschooler who "reads" the story to you from memory.

Early literacy skills begin to develop in the first five years of life. Your child's early experiences with books and language lay the foundation for success in learning to read. Don't worry about teaching your young child to read-- that can wait for school. The most important thing you can do to get your child ready to read is to have fun with words and reading.

The library has lots of resources to help you. Reading and talking with your child helps your child become a better reader later. Children who play with words and language are better prepared to learn to read. Make sure your child sees you reading, too!

Summer Reading Program for Kids

DIG INTO READING!

Dig into a good book this summer! The 2013 Summer Reading fun begins June 17 and will run through August 17. Get a head start on your reading and register starting June 1. Readers from babies through 12 years old will “Dig Into Reading!” with weekly activities and prizes at your favorite library. Readers of all ages can burrow into a good book, even toddlers and preschoolers can participate if someone reads aloud to them.

Explore all things underground as you experience magic, archeology, sand castles, cork trolls, fairy kisses, compost critters, and even a pirate invasion. There is so much to see and do @ your library this summer! All activities are FREE, no library card required. You can also earn great prizes just by reading. Hang onto your reading tickets, because we will have weekly drawings. You just might win! Everyone who reads (or is read to) 10 hours can claim their free book and other goodies until the end of August. We have lots of prizes, including free books, plus coupons for Daffodil Entertainment Center, Trackside Pizza, McDonald's, Applebee's, Old Country Buffet, Auntie Anne's Pretzels, Northwest Trek or Pt. Defiance Zoo!

We watched the live action Death Note movie while we made delicious treats - the kind that L would appreciate - candy sushi! Rice krispy treats and gummy worms never looked so cool!

Cartooning & Webcomics with Bill Barnes

How cool is it when Bill Barnes comes to your library to talk about making comics? It's very cool indeed! This workshop was pretty full, and we had lots of fun learning about what sorts of things your brain is doing when it reads a comic or getting up to the whiteboard and doing some drawing. If you still haven't read Unshelved, you should go there now and read some of it!

It was quite the crowd... we have more comic-fans than you can shake a stick at!

Yes, it's true that Bill Barnes moves outside of time and space. We just barely captured him on film.

Check out what happens before a comic is born!

A brave volunteer got up in front of the crowd and drew her own comic strip, "Tiny Minds."

And soon lots of people were hard at work on the whiteboard!

Summer Reading 2011

One World, Many Stories

2011 was a summer about traveling and exploring. The children's theme was One World, Many Stories. We learned about our history, meeting John, Paul, George, and Ben, and hearing stories the brought the Civil War to life. There were magic lessons with Louie Foxx and drawing lessons taken from around the world with Kim Zeiger.

Our teen theme was You Are Here - but where was here, exactly? We explored Puyallup when we geocached, did plein air sketches with Becky Bane, and learned about movement and exercise with parkour. We tried new things in our Iron Chef competition, visited Japan (and OZ) when we watched Summer Wars, and even got locked in the library overnight!

We want to share our memories of this summer with you! Please enjoy our pictures and videos.

This video is a collection of pictures from our kids' and teen programs. Enjoy photos from different events, including magician Louie Foxx, the Late Night Lock-In, the UnCivil War, and Drawing with Kim Zeiger.

In July, Parkour Visions taught teens about parkour, a form of exercise that involves using the environment around you to move and get from point A to point B. These pictures are of the teens as they went from stretching to jumping to exploring parts of Pioneer Park. Click here to look at the teens' adventures in parkour!

On August 3rd, the teens gathered for an Iron Chef competition. We had some super tasty results! Here's Iron Chef Part 1, where the teens prepared the dishes with our secret ingredient.

And here's part two, where the judges choose our winner!

Our Late Night Lock-In featured a lot of goofy games and running around the library. Here's a video of our Scavenger Hunt, which involved tons of footwork, researching, and examining the library. Also, a good sense of balance.

The second part of our Lock-In features our Paper Airplane contest and Silent Library games.

Our Guitar Hero competition meant we listened to a lot of Michael Jackson and Bon Jovi! I was surprised at the song choices! This was a great program and I can't wait to have another Guitar Hero session. Next time, though, we need some people to sing!

Anime Club: Karneval

Armed with only an abandoned bracelet as a clue, Nai searches for someone dear to him. After a run in with a pick-pocket named Gareki, the two find themselves involved in a government set-up that leaves them wanted criminals. Desperate and on-the-run, Nai and Gareki turn to the country’s most powerful defense organization - “Circus” - for help.

Free Comic Book Day

& Star Wars Day: May the 4th Be With You!

Free Comic Book Day returns to the Puyallup Public Library on May 4, 2013! As the name implies, this is a day when comic book stores and libraries around the world give away comics to people of all ages. At the Puyallup Public Library, we’ll be handing out comic books at the front of the library, from 10 am until 3 pm (as supplies last). Treat your inner comic book guy to superheroes, including The Avengers or Superman, classic comics such as The Walking Dead, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, or Sonic the Hedgehog, or try a new series like Adventure Time or Steam Engines of Oz, just to name a few of the titles we’ll have available.

Because this year’s Free Comic Book Day falls on May 4th, we’ll also be celebrating Star Wars Day: May the 4th Be With You! Astromech builder Cole Horton and his R2 unit, R2-M5, a droid in the Royal Naboo Security Force, will be at the library from 10 am – 3 pm. Mr. Horton will lead a presentation from 11 am – 12 pm on building astromechs; if you’ve ever dreamed of building your own R2 unit, make sure to attend this free event! It's time to spruce up the Teen Zone! We'll be decoupaging the Teen Zone table – feel free to bring magazine clippings and art to add to the table. You’ll also have access to a variety of craft materials for to work with. While we work, we’ll be watching Super Mario Bros. (PG). Way back in 1993, it seemed like a good idea to make the video game into a movie. It was not. Mario and Luigi, two wacky plumbers, undertake a daring quest to save a princess in “Dinohattan” – a hidden world where the inhabitants evolved from dinosaurs. The movie promises a live-action thrill ride that will dazzle you… you’ll only be dazzled by how terrible it is. J

Want to learn how to take better photos? Come to our free workshop and get some great tips from photography enthusiasts. Then venture into the great outdoors (Pioneer Park) and take Makankosappo pictures! This is the latest craze sweeping Japan. We’ll be taking photos as you pretend to launch massive Dragon Ball Z-style energy attacks. Check out our sample pic, with a girl sending out a shockwave of energy that throws nearby victims into the air. We’ll have some cameras available at the library for teens to borrow and computers where you can upload and edit the pictures. Feel free to bring your own camera or smart phone, though!

But they do love heroes... so when a modern, first-person shooter game arrives, Ralph sees it as his ticket to heroism and happiness. He sneaks into the game with a simple plan - win a medal - but soon wrecks everything, and accidentally unleashes a deadly enemy that threatens every game in the arcade. Ralph's only hope? Vanellope von Schweetz, a young troublemaking "glitch" from a candy-coated cart racing game who might just be the one to teach Ralph what it means to be a Good Guy.

And then we took those sock puppets, and we took pictures of them, and we create sock puppet portraits. And lo and behold, this video was made, showing some of the fantabulous puppets we created.

On the subway, do ever notice that people are always looking, but they only see what they want to? Things can be sitting right in front of them and still they can't see it. That's your guide Anthony speaking. He'll show you how he lives in the tunnels underneath the New York City subway system-that is, if you'll let him. Which is exactly what Youme decided she would do one afternoon when she and Anthony began a conversation in the subway about art.

The Radioactive Boy Scout: the Frightening True Story of a Whiz Kid and His Homemade Nuclear Reactor by Ken Silverstein (209 pages)

David Hahn, a boy scout, wanted to earn his science merit badge. He could have done an experiment with bicarbonate of soda, like most other kids. But he didn't. Argh! The Seafair Pirates raided the Library on July 14th - and by raided, we mean that they came in, harassing patrons, telling stories, and answering those piratical, historical questions that plague us all... like did pirates really have parrots? And what do you call a pirate ship's cook? Or who was the true captain of the Flying Dutchman? Then the pirates set to making us look like we'd been through a rigorous battle, complete with blood and bruises.

This list contains books about travel: road trips, voyages around the world, traveling through time and space, and epic journeys. You’ll find a mix of stories set in the present, past, future, and fantasies. These books are aimed at 7th – 9th grade students, though they may appeal to older and younger reads. It’s up to each reader and their family to determine the books that are appropriate for themselves.

Travel Key:

Fantasy – Magical worlds, which have plenty of journeys of their own

Graphic novel – A story told in a comic book format

Hero’s journey - A hero ventures forth from the world of common day into a region of supernatural wonder

Historical fiction – A story set in our past

Road trip – Traveling the open road, usually by car

Science fiction – Futuristic science and technology means lots of new ways to travel

Time travel – Why stick with the present when you can go back years and centuries?

Traveling around the world – By plane, by boat, by railroad, these characters go outside the country
