What comic book series am I wild about right now?  Why, it's Scott Pilgrim by Bryan Lee O'Malley!  It's about Scott, a lovable Canadian slacker, and his mysterious, awesome, possibly-a-secret-ninja girlfriend, Ramona Flowers.  Oh, and his roommate, Wallace Wells, and his band, the Sex Bob-ombs, and all of Ramona's evil ex-boyfriends....

Scott Pilgrim is 23 years old, living in the big city with his gay roommate, just trying to get by in this crazy world. He's in a band. He's lazy. He likes video games. Scott Pilgrim also likes the new girl in town, Ramona Flowers, a delivery girl.  He first sees Ramona skating through his dreams, which she thinks are really lame, on her way to delivery a package.  When he meets her at a party, Scott Pilgrim realizes she's no dream and he wants to date her.  He borrows his roommate's credit card, orders a package, and before he knows it, Ramona is at his door with his package.

Scott Pilgrim wants to win Ramona's heart, but first he has to defeat her seven evil ex-boyfriends.  One plays bass and has psychic vegan powers.  Another is a movie star/skateboarder.  And another is a not-so-secret ninja!

The first book, Scott Pilgrim's Precious Little Life, hooked me in the first few pages!  The humor in Scott Pilgrim is off-the-wall random, and there are many references to video games and comics - in the first volume, Ramona asks Scott what the symbol on his jacket sleeve, an X, means.  He tells her "Oh, this? Well, obviously, one of us went to Professor Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, and one of us didn't."  And Ramona responds, "Obviously one of us is a total nerd."  The artwork looks fairly simple, but you'll be surprised at the depth of emotion you find in these characters.  There are obvious manga-inspirations, particularly in the fight scenes between Scott and the evil ex-es.

The series will be wrapping up *gasp* next year with the final volume.  However, a movie is in the works, directed by Edgar Wright and starring Michael Cera and Mary Elizabeth Winstead.  I've been enjoying the video blogs updating the movie's progress.  Check out the bonus hula-hooping blog entry!

So... what are you waiting for?  If you haven't started reading Scott Pilgrim, then you need to get to the library and check it out.  All five volumes.  Now!
