Nov. 19, 2009 at 2:38pm Logan's Story - A magazine for young people with disabilities

Sometimes the fashion magazines out there are frustrating.  It's difficult not to compare yourself to the models, or think about how light your wallet feels as you long for designer clothes.  And there's more to you than makeup tips, relationship quizzes, and fashion faux pas.  If you're feeling like you need a magazine with more depth, then run to the library (that's right, run!) and check out Logan Magazine!  It's dedicated to fashion & lifestyles for young people with disabilities.

Logan Olson got the idea for her magazine after she suffered a heart attack at the age of 16.  Logan was born with congenital heart disease, and the heart attack left her in a coma, with a brain injury.  When she woke up, Logan had lost years of her memory and couldn't hold up her head or talk.  She spent months in the hospital and has gone through speech and physical therapy to recover.

At the suggestion of a nurse, her friends and family filled her hospital room with reminders of what it's like to be a teenage girl, including music, clothes, and makeup.  These helped Logan, but trying to do everyday things like putting on makeup or doing her own hair were impossible with uncooperative fingers.  Logan looked through fashion magazines for ideas, but found that people with disabilities were not included in these magazines.  And that was when inspiration struck.

Logan Magazine is features trendy fashion suggestions that will fit just about anyone's budget.  There are also columns on college, careers, and recipes, as well as products that promote independence and lists of organizations that assist people with disabilities.

The latest issue of Logan Magazine features articles on Kevin Michael Connolly, a photographer and champion skier who was born without legs; Deanne Bray, a woman born with sever hearing loss, joining the cast of Heroes as a deaf person with the ability to see and manipulate sound waves; and resources for dealing with mental/psychiatric disorders.  On top of the great content, Logan Magazine is beautiful, with great pictures and a clean design that makes it easy to pick up and read.  The website,, is also a great source of info!

We've got a lot of great magazines in our Teen Zone, and I hope you take a peak at Logan Magazine the next time you're in the library!
