It's here! It's here! Okay, the book isn't actually here, and it won't be here until the end of August, which seems a very, very long ways away. But at the very least we now have a cover and a title about which we may fantasize! The title of the final book in the Hunger Games trilogy is... Hunger Games Book 3 announced!
Mockingjay! Scholastic posted pictures of the cover and a list of things we can count on to not happen in the final volume on their On Our Minds blog. Publishers Weekly also had an article about Mockingjay and the series, talking about fan anticipation and, very briefly, about movie plans. Who would you like to see playing Katniss and Peeta on the big screen?
And why is it that the UK gets the cool screensavers?
For those of you not in the know, The Hunger Games is an action-packed series focusing on Katniss, a sixteen-year-old girl living in District 12 in the nation that was once North America. Every year, each of the 12 districts must randomly choose one boy and one girl between the ages of 12 and 18. These teens are sent to the Capital and become instant celebrities. They receive a week of combat and survival training, are treated to the finest foods and clothes, and are given a team of stylists and fashion designers. Then they are put into the Arena, a deadly landscape designed especially for the Hunger Games. The games are televised in all the districts, displaying a brutal and deadly competition. Twenty-four teens enter the Arena, but only one leaves alive.
When her little sister is selected for the Hunger Games, Katniss volunteers to take her place. She knows that the only way she'll ever see her friends and family again is to kill the twenty-three competitors. Going with her is Peeta, a boy who once helped save Katniss and her family from starvation. She doesn't know if she can trust him, or if his nice-guy attitude is just an act to fool her. She must do everything she can to survive, but that may mean abandoning her own humanity.
It's an amazing mix of survival, action, science fiction, and reality TV. You can check it out from the Puyallup Library in either the book or the audio CD format!
