May. 24, 2010 at 1:47pm Impact of This Year's Budget Cut

Library Staff recently had to cut 28% of our serials budget or a total of 62 titles.  Users will start seeing fewer titles this summer, as the renewal dates end in June.

As you might recall, the Puyallup Library took a $125,000 budget reduction this year and our materials were cut by 30%.  Since this cut was made in February, we continue to buy fewer books and we often send our users to other libraries for materials that we are unable to afford to purchase this year.

Now it is time to renew our magazines, which has also taken a 30% budget cut.  It was very difficult for the librarians to determine the magazines to eliminate from the collection.  In order to be good stewards of the public dollars, we based our decisions on:  cost per use, numbers of times the item was used, whether we had a similar title in a subject area, and if a magazine  broadened the range of interests represented in our collection.

The decisions were very difficult and painful to make.  Below are the titles we have not renewed.
