John Knutsen is a 1963 graduate of Puyallup High School (PHS). After three years in construction, he joined the Tacoma Police Department where he served 25 years, retiring as a detective. During his police department service he attended, and graduated, from the Tacoma Police Academy and the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs School.
His wife, Laurie, is a PHS graduate, class of 1965, as is their daughter, Kim Root who is a teacher at Puyallup High School, and their son, John who works for Microsoft.
Mayor Knutsen has over 30 years of youth sports coaching, including positions as an assistant baseball coach at Puyallup High School and an assistant basketball coach at Franklin Pierce High School. He was one of the original co-founders of the Bacon Bowl Charity Football Game, which benefits Mary Bridge Children's Hospital.
He currently serves on the South Sound 911 Policy Board and the City of Puyallup's Fire Pension Board and Lodging Tax Advisory Committee. He additionally serves as Puyallup's representative to both the Pierce County Cities and Towns Association and the Valley Cities Association.
Mayor Knutsen believes that the future of Puyallup depends on the council's respect for the past, and that we need not copy anyone.
