Retail
The South Hill Mall is the major regional mall in the City. Situated on 83 acres of land, the mall has four anchor stores open as well as over 70 specialty shops. The mall employs approximately 1,500 people. Major anchors include Sears, Macy’s, JC Penney, and Target. Recently completed Mall projects include an expansion/remodel to the Target store, a Krispy Kreme donut store and a Famous Dave’s Barbeque restaurant. In late 2009, JC Penney completed construction to re-occupy the large Mall anchor tenant space formerly occupied by Mervyns, in addition to retaining their current Penney’s anchor tenant location. In mid-2010, the Mall opened a new anchor tenant, Dick’s Sporting Goods, occupying approximately 53,000 square feet of retail space.
The vicinity of the South Hill Mall includes the following major commercial developments:
Lowe’s home improvement center, which currently occupies a 50,000 square foot facility on South Hill, is currently under construction with a brand new 103,000 square foot facility on a nearby site. Occupancy of that facility is expected in 2011.
The South Hill Shopping Center, located two blocks south of the Mall, opened in 2002 after a major remodel and upgrade. Formerly containing a supermarket and vacant spaces, the center tenants include a Best Buy electronics outlet (45,200 square feet), a Ross Dress-for-Less (30,100 square feet), a Bed, Bath & Beyond (32,900 square feet) and other smaller tenant spaces.
The 400,000 square foot retail center known as South Hill Village is located on 40 acres adjacent to the Mall. The two main tenants in this center are Home Depot and Wal-Mart. Also found here are Office Depot, Pet Smart, Big Lots and smaller restaurant pads. In 2005, construction was completed on Wal-Mart’s new 75,000 square foot addition to their facility, allowing a major expansion of their retail operation.
Costco has a 149,000 square foot outlet, approximately one-quarter mile west of the Mall. A new 103-unit hotel (Liberty Inn) adjacent to Costco is now under City permit review.
A new 120-unit Fairfield Marriot Hotel, located on 15th Ave SW, generally south of the Western Washington Fairgrounds, is now under construction .
South Hill Park is a mixed retail/office complex across SR–512 from the South Hill Mall. Built on a 40-acre site, this complex includes a retail commercial store, two motels, and a restaurant, as well as a gas station/fast food outlet.
Other recent projects at this site within the last ten years are a 10,000 square foot Social Security Service office building, a large Baptist church, and a Big Foot gas station/restaurant/car wash.
Other nearby South Hill projects include a 32,000 square foot medical office/surgery center, on 5th Street SE; and a 7,100 square foot medical office building (Pyramid Peak) located on 17th Ave. SE.
Hampton Inn is under permit review for a 72,148 square foot Hotel at the intersection of Meridian and 15th Ave SE, which will provide 110 rooms near the MultiCare-Good Samaritan Hospital and Western Washington Fairgrounds.
The City of Puyallup is also home to one of the highest-selling auto rows in Western Washington. This car dealership
sector has seen several recent expansion projects. This includes construction of a new Korum Nissan dealership on a 5.2-acre site on Valley Avenue, which opened in late 2003, a relocation/expansion of the Korum Hyundai dealership to River Road-N. Meridian, which was completed in 2005, and development of new Chrysler & KIA dealerships on adjacent parcels (comprising 15 acres total at the northeast corner of Valley-N. Meridian) which opened in 2006 and 2007, respectively. This solidifies a new auto dealership hub in the City north of the Puyallup River, in addition to the long-standing River Road auto row.
