Subject:    Speed Limit along North Meridian (Valley Avenue to northerly city limits)
Presenter: Mark Palmer
Department: Public Works

Recommended Action

Adopt a resolution authorizing WSDOT to lower the speed limit along North Meridian from Puyallup's northerly limits to Valley Avenue.

Recently, WSDOT staff approved the City of Edgewood’s request to lower speed limit along North Meridian in the Edgewood city limits from 40 mph to 35 mph. Once this is implemented, the speed limit along North Meridian would be:
  • 35 mph north of Puyallup's northerly city limits
  • 40 mph between Puyallup's northerly city limits and Valley Avenue. This roadway segment is approximately 2000 feet long.
  • 30 mph south of Valley Avenue NW.
WSDOT staff has requested a resolution from the City of Puyallup to lower the speed limit along North Meridian from Puyallup’s northerly limits to Valley Avenue.
Previous Actions (Discussions/Presentations)
Summary of Proposal
As the speed limit along North Meridian is 40 mph just for a small section (approximately 2000 feet), staff recommends that Council authorize WSDOT to lower the speed limit along this section of North Meridian, north of Valley Avenue, to 35 mph. Though travel times may decrease very slightly during off-peak periods along this roadway segment, it is not anticipated that drivers would divert to other roadways with this speed limit reduction.
If Council chose to take no action, the speed limit of 40 mph along North Meridian for a segment of approximately 2000 feet would be retained.
