On Constitution Day, September 17th, Puyallup Municipal Court Judge Andrea Beall spoke to two sixth grade classes at Edgemont Jr. High. Judge Beall gave an overview of the Constitution and our American judicial system. The presentation ended with a game, where students were assigned to be judges in a particular type of court. They were read hypotheticals and had to determine if they had jurisdiction to hear the type of case presented. The students did remarkably well at the game, demonstrating their interest and understanding.
Pioneer Park Pavilion
The Pavilion at Pioneer Park remained busy through September, hosting five weddings, the Washington State Fair Wranglers’ Breakfast, a two-day senior housing seminar, and the Pierce County Regional Council’s (PCRC) training seminar.
The popular Puyallup Farmers Market is still going strong on Saturday mornings in Pioneer Park and the Pavilion from 9am-2pm. The market will end for the season on Saturday, October 13th.
Quilt making occurs at the Puyallup Activity Center every Friday morning from 9:30 to noon. The class is intended for all ability levels and offers an opportunity for participants to learn the craft of quilt making from an award-winning quilter.
Toddler Campus Preschool
The 2018-19 school year has started at the Puyallup Recreation Center for Toddler Campus Preschool students. Nineteen Pre-Kindergarteners (4-5 year olds) and seventeen preschoolers (3-4 year olds) are learning to be comfortable in a classroom, exploring friendships, crafting, and playing games and puzzles. They are also being introduced to the alphabet. Ms. Shannon and Ms. Amanda are excited to watch all the students learn and grow throughout the school year. Toddler Campus Preschool starts in September and runs through May.
Noteworthy Development Projects
A number of noteworthy private development projects are currently under construction around the City. These include:
- Sunrise Elementary School: Construction is underway on the new Sunrise Elementary School that is being built on the sports field area of the existing school campus. The new school should be ready for occupancy by fall of 2019, after which time the existing school buildings will be demolished to make way for new outdoor play areas.
- Central Pierce Station #72: Site work has begun for the new fire station, located on the west side of the former Lumberman’s site at 5th Street SE and 39th Avenue SE. Stormwater vault installation and other sub-surface work is currently underway.
- Affinity Senior Housing: Just south of the new fire station site, on 5th Street SE, major site work is now underway for the “Affinity” senior housing facility. This project will eventually include 168 independent senior living units in a four-story facility, located diagonally across from the YMCA.
- “At Home” store: Major remodel work is now occurring at the old Lowe’s building at 37th Avenue SE and 5th Street SE. The majority (approximately 87,000 square feet) of this structure is being converted into At Home - the Home Décor Superstore retail space. At Home is based in Texas and has stores throughout the Midwest and East; this will be the first of their stores on the West Coast. At Home intends to open mid-December with the balance of the building, in the southeast corner, eventually becoming a new 24-Hour Fitness Center.
- Meridian Place Starbucks: The relocated Meridian Place Starbucks store recently opened in part of a new retail building fronting S. Meridian (just south of 43rd Avenue SE), in front of their previous space. The other half of the new building will eventually contain an AT&T retail center.
- 30th-Meridian Office complex, Phase 4: Site clearing work has also commenced at 30th Avenue SW and S. Meridian, the location of the former Hilltop Auto Service business. The fourth professional office building in this complex will be three stories high and encompass approximately 26,000 square feet, similar in size to the Phase 1 & 3 buildings in the complex, and – like the rest of the center - is expected to principally contain professional medical tenants.
- Huntington Apartments: Site work continues on this property in the 2000 block of S. Meridian, which will eventually contain 38 new multi-family units in multiple buildings.
Puyallup Valley Sports Field Turf Conversion Project
Construction is underway at the Puyallup Valley Sports Complex to convert the three infields and the outfield of Field #2 to synthetic field turf. Once installation is complete, the fields will be available for use year-round for baseball, softball, soccer, lacrosse and football. The fields are expected to be finished and ready for play in March 2019.
Van Lierop Park Phase 1 Construction
Construction is well underway at Van Lierop Park. Phase 1 development includes the Daffodil Plaza, Daffodil Vista View Corridor, the first segment of the multi-use trail, a temporary connection to 134th, site stabilization seeding and a temporary parking lot.
Card Making Class
A fun and creative group of people meet at the Activity Center each Monday morning and express their creativity through card making. The class demonstrates how to make beautiful greeting cards with only basic materials. Newcomers have become fast friends and they look forward to spending some time creating unique cards at an affordable price. The completed cards are displayed and available for purchase as a fundraiser for the Senior Center.
Potential New Development
Over the past several weeks, City Development Review staff have held pre-application meetings with the proponents of the following potential new development projects:
- Various site upgrades to the existing Linden Golf Course, located on the north side of East Main along the Puyallup River. Proposed improvements include a new driving range and multiple site and structural alterations around the course’s clubhouse area.
- A two-lot single-family residential short plat in the 1800 block of Fruitland Avenue.
- A new townhouse structure on a vacant site at the northeast corner of 2nd Street NE and 5th Avenue NE. This site plan calls for lower-level structured parking, a commercial space and residential units.
- A new residential triplex building in the 700 block of 5th Street SW.
- A new multi-family residential building on a vacant site along the Puyallup River in the 1100 block of East Main (behind Taco Time). As proposed, the project would contain multiple stories, with surface and structured parking as well as a public open space along the Riverwalk Trail.
- Center-wide façade upgrades and tenant space revisions throughout the Meridian Place Shopping Center, located between 43rd and 47th Streets SE on S. Meridian. Current tenants include Michael’s, the former Sports Authority and the new Starbucks. These proposed revisions will not result in a large amount of new floor area, but are intended to achieve various design and functional upgrades that will better attract and accommodate retail tenants.
- A new 57-unit multi-story senior housing “Village Cooperative” residential project, slated for a vacant four-acre site at the northeast corner of 39th Avenue SW and 17th Street SW, across from the Fruitland Grange. A Minnesota-based developer has identified Puyallup as a suitable market for a new independent senior housing co-op arrangement, which they have had success with building elsewhere in the country.
Puyallup Activity Center’s “Day at the Fair”
The Activity Center sponsored an information booth at the Puyallup Fair on September 23rd. Staff and volunteers were on hand all day in the Fair’s Pavilion Building to promote the Activity Center and its wide variety of programs and services, and to answer any questions the public may have had. Visitors enjoyed live demonstrations from our woodcarvers and appreciated learning about the resources that are available at the Center from the program leaders. At the conclusion, our Center was awarded a special booth display ribbon from the Fair judges.
