Clarks Creek DO & Sediment TMDL

DO? Sediment? TMDL? Clarks Creek is Puyallup's most prominent urban stream, winding through parks and backyards, to its confluence with the Puyallup Rive in Pierce County limits by River Road. With several urban impacts degrading the water quality in Clarks Creek Washington Department of Ecology and the U.S. EPA have issued a Water Quality Improvement Project to support improvements in the creek.  
 

Dissolved Oxygen (DO)

 
Oxygen levels in water are measured as 'dissolved oxygen', providing air for aquatic plants, fish, and overall health of a water way. Various factors, including excessive growth of elodea, less-than-adequate shading, and nutrient loading from landscape runoff has decreased the available DO in Clarks Creek. A water quality plan was created for the creek to help improve the dissolved oxygen levels to better support the health of the creek.
 

Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL)


Development of a TMDL occurs when regulations are needed to dictate the maximum amount of pollutants or set the minimum levels of healthy water characteristics that can be present in the water without affecting the aquatic life or overall water quality.

A Water Quality Project Plan is developed to design and implement activities that will improve the levels of DO in the water and reduce the sediment loading into the creek as well as in-water sedimentation to achieved the TMDL goals.
